Year 1 Curriculum:  

Our Curriculum

Year 1 Autumn 2 2021

 

The Great Fire of London and The Polar Express- These will be our novel study books for the half term. Children will complete activities linked to the historical event and take part in a ‘Polar Express Day’ later on in the half term.

Phonics- Daily phonics sessions where children are homogenously grouped. Children will learn 2 new sounds a day and complete reading and writing activities.

 

 

 

 

Numbers to 20- we will learn to Identify, represent, compare and order numbers to 20, doubling and halving numbers and one more/ one less.

Addition and Subtraction within 20- we will learn to represent and explain addition and subtraction strategies including ‘Make Ten’.

 

Name common animals and their structure

Match the animals to the labels: bird, fish, amphibian, reptile, mammal and invertebrate. 

Label animals as carnivore, herbivores or omnivore. 

Match animals and plants to their habitats

Food chains and sources of food

Name a variety of light sources and illustrate how light travels from light sources to our eyes

Name a variety of sounds and illustrate how our ears allow us to hear sounds

 

 

 

 

 

The Great Fire of London – We will learn about how the fire started and why it spread so quickly. We will learn about significant individuals from this time.

Gun Powder Plot – We will learn about this significant event and why we commemorate it every year.

Remembrance Day- We will remember those who died in battle.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The United Kingdom – We will learn about the 4 countries that make up the United Kingdom including England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. We will focus on the human and physical features of the countries and complete map work.

 

 

Design and Technology – During DT sessions we will plan, design and make a model of ‘Pudding Lane’, we will then use circuits to light up the buildings, rein acting the Great Fire of London.

 

 

 

 

 

Charanga- Rhythm in the way we walk

1. Listen & Appraise- We will Learn the song Rhythm In The Way We Walk, an action song about the interrelated dimensions of music. 2. Musical Activities - learn and/or build on your knowledge and understanding about the interrelated dimensions of music. 3. Perform the Song - perform and share your learning as we progress through the Unit of Work.

We will also start to learn and perform songs for our Nativity performance.   

 

 

 

 

 

PSHE- Jigsaw Celebrating Differences   

Children will explore similarities and differences between people and how this makes us special. Children will learn about bullying and understand what this is and what to do if they feel someone is being bullied.

 

 

 

 

 

Ball Skills- We will be learning how to pass, control, throw, catch and receive a pass in game situations. Children will be expected to listen to and follow instructions in game situations playing as part of a team.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Technology Around Us- Learners will develop their understanding of technology and how it can help them in their everyday lives. They will start to become familiar with the different components of a computer by developing their keyboard and mouse skills. Learners will also consider how to use technology responsibly.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 ‘What makes some places sacred?’ We will be discussing different religious and spiritual ways of life about places of worship for Christians and either Jewish people or Muslims.

A few helpful reminders

  • On Friday, we have indoor and outdoor PE (children to come to school in PE kit.)
  • On Friday, books must be brought into school and will be swapped on a Monday. 
  • Please do not bring books back into school before Friday.

To help your child learn, you could:

  • Talk to them about their school day
  • Listen to them read at least three times per week
  • Complete the activities set on Maths with Parents and Gooseberry Planet, together.
