Science
Leaders of Science Mrs Hogarty
At Balby Central Primary Academy we think like scientists.
We are all curious and try to prove or disprove findings by changing and eliminating one thing at a time in investigations. This allows us to solve problems through scientific investigation. In classes, we discuss current knowledge about the world and wonder how we can change things by creating new ideas.
Science is a creative and exciting subject and at Balby Central we make it as creative and investigative as we can. We want children to wonder about the world and learn in awe as they discover new knowledge and gain new understanding. We empower our children to know that they can make discoveries of their own, like many well-known scientists. We teach the children that many phenomenas in life link to past scientific investigations and that there will be many more in their lifetime - many new problems that they will be the generation tasked with solving. We encourage problem solving in the following ways:

How do we teach science?
We use CUSP (Curriculum with Unity Schools Partnership) to deliver our Science curriculum.
What we cover in each year group
From this, teachers plan and deliver lessons based on core skills and knowledge, practise of the new skills and application of how to use the skills in different contexts.
To aid their knowledge, basic facts will be given to the children at the beginning of a topic and used throughout the topic - this is called a knowledge organiser. A knowledge note will be used each lesson to aid each children with the facts they need for that lesson and the focus will be on learning those facts and applying them. Each teacher will assess how well a topic or skill has been learned and applied and differentiated lessons will be planned accordingly. Please see your child's class teacher should you require more information about the Science curriculum your child is following.
