Helping your child to be ready for learning

Helping children to become confident, independent learners is an important part of their development. By encouraging positive learning behaviours such as curiosity, resilience, perseverance, listening, and taking responsibility for their own learning, children develop the skills they need to succeed both in school and in everyday life. Independence can be nurtured by giving children opportunities to solve problems, make choices, and learn from their mistakes in a supportive environment. A strong partnership between home and school plays a vital role in this process. When parents and teachers communicate regularly, share expectations, and work together to encourage consistent routines, positive attitudes, and a love of learning, children feel supported, motivated, and more confident to reach their full potential.

Strong Foundations

Strong foundations in the Early Years are essential for children's future learning and development. Through play, exploration, and meaningful experiences, children develop the skills, confidence, and knowledge they need to succeed. Building these foundations from the Early Years through to Year 1 ensures a smooth transition, allowing children to strengthen their communication, social, emotional, physical, and early literacy and numeracy skills. A consistent and supportive approach helps children become confident, resilient, and independent learners who are well prepared for the next stage of their education.

Year 2, Year 3, Year 4

In Years 2, 3 and 4, children continue to develop their independence by taking greater responsibility for their learning and building positive learning behaviours. They are encouraged to show resilience, perseverance, curiosity, organisation, and confidence when tackling new challenges. As children become more independent, they learn to manage their time, reflect on their progress, solve problems, and work collaboratively with others. These skills help children become motivated, self-reliant learners who are well prepared for the increasing expectations of the next stages of their education.

Year 5 and Year 6

As children move into the upper years and begin learning in their own area of the school, developing independence becomes increasingly important in preparing them for the transition to secondary school. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for organising their learning, managing their time, making informed decisions, and reflecting on their progress. They continue to strengthen positive learning behaviours such as resilience, self-motivation, collaboration, and problem-solving, enabling them to approach new challenges with confidence. By fostering independence and responsibility, children are well equipped with the skills, confidence, and mindset needed for a successful transition to secondary education and lifelong learning.
