Supporting our community
Doncaster and its local area is important to us. We love being involved in different projects supporting our local area organisations and making a difference in our community. Partners we work with aim to give our children the opportunity to work together, learn more about where they live and take part in different activities

Elderseed - An Intergenerational Project
Our Year 5 gardeners have been part of the 'Elderseed Project' with Ivy Court Care Home and recently took part in a celebration party tasting produce that had been grown at Balby Central and at Ivy Court. The event had a party atmosphere with children sharing what they have enjoyed about the project, planting and growing different vegetables together. This year we have grown peas, sweetcorn, strawberries, tomatoes, cucumber, damsons, beetroot and lettuce. The children have met with the residents each month to share experiences of growing vegetables, learn about different varieties and find out more about how to grow vegetables. At the start of the project Ethan came up with the name 'Elderseed' to reflect the intergenerational project aims and what a great name this was to reflect our work together. Each week, we have had an enthusiastic team of Year 5 gardeners who have watered, dug out weeds, nurtured plants and picked produce. Intergenerational projects are about bringing communities together and we certainly achieved this! A big thank you to the residents at Ivy Court, the children and Kamilla, Nikki, Amy and Kirstie at Doncaster Council for all your ideas, support and advice. It has been such a joy to be part of the project. We have learned lots about gardening and the benefits of these activities on our emotional wellbeing. We hope the pilot project will be used by lots of other schools in the future.
